Can AI build an ecommerce site? Yes — a simple one, with caveats that matter. And no — if you mean the whole store, because most of what makes a store work never touches the website builder. Our bench tests six AI builders against one standard brief, a five-page site for a fictional coffee roaster, and the shop question comes up constantly anyway: what happens when the roaster wants to sell the beans online? Here's the answer by tier, with every price checked in August 2026.

The short answer

Three of the six builders we rank can genuinely produce a working store: Wix AI, Hostinger AI, and 10Web. One — Framer — does commerce through a Shopify plugin rather than natively. One — Durable — says in its own pricing FAQ that it isn't built for ecommerce. And one — Lovable — can build you a store the way a developer would: by writing the actual code. Which lane fits depends on how much store you need.

Simple stores: yes, with caveats

Wix AI

Wix is the conventional pick. The AI builder generates the site; selling requires the Core plan at $29/mo billed annually ($36/mo monthly) — the first tier that can accept payments, which also unlocks Bookings and brings 50 GB of storage. The caveat is exactly that gate: neither the free plan nor the $17/mo Light plan can take a payment, so the real entry price for "AI builds my store on Wix" is $29 a month. Hostinger AI

Hostinger's ecommerce tier is the one shown as "Unlimited" on its live pricing page — $3.99/mo on the intro term, with integrated ecommerce, 0% transaction fees, 15 AI creation credits, and unlimited websites. Two caveats travel with that headline: the intro price rides a 48-month prepay, and renewal jumps to $16.99/mo, which is the figure to actually budget. 10Web

10Web includes its ecommerce dashboard — products, orders, payments, analytics — on every plan, down to AI Starter at $10/mo billed annually. It's WordPress with WooCommerce underneath, which cuts both ways: you inherit the most extensible store stack on this list, and you inherit WordPress's maintenance personality with it. Framer: a storefront skin for Shopify

Framer shows no native ecommerce plan on its current pricing page. Stores run through the Framer Commerce plugin, which syncs a Shopify storefront into Framer with more than 40 Shopify components. Read that arrangement plainly: Framer designs the shop window, Shopify runs the shop, and you pay for both. Some 2026 guides mention a "Scale" ecommerce tier from around $100/mo — we couldn't verify it on the live pricing page as of our last check, so treat that figure as unconfirmed. Durable: wrong tool, by its own admission

Durable's pricing FAQ states that it "is not designed specifically to support e-commerce businesses," and we'd take the company at its word — refreshingly, so does its marketing. Durable's lane is the fast, competent site for local service businesses, and our Durable review rates it well inside that lane. If a Durable-shaped business sells a handful of items, a payment link from your processor pasted onto a page will carry you further than you'd expect. A catalog, cart, and inventory system will not materialize.

Lovable: the custom-build lane

Lovable is the odd machine out: it has no ecommerce plan because it has no feature-gated plans in that sense at all. It generates real application code, and you wire up payments — Stripe or similar — inside whatever it builds. Any paid tier works; Pro runs $25/mo, or $21/mo billed annually. This lane exists for the store that doesn't fit templates: unusual checkout logic, subscriptions with odd rules, a product configurator. The honest caveat: you're taking ownership of an application, not renting a store, and the platform plumbing a Shopify-style service handles for you — tax handling, compliance, PCI — becomes your project. What AI can't stock

Whichever lane you choose, the builder's AI stops at the website's edge. No model on any plan produces:

• Product photography. Generated images of products you actually ship are a returns policy waiting to happen. Real items need real photographs, taken by someone who has held them.
• Operations. Inventory counts, shipping rates, carrier choices, tax settings — each one is a decision the AI will scaffold with defaults, and each default you don't correct is a small future refund.
• Fulfillment copy that's true. Delivery windows, return terms, what "in stock" means at your volume — an AI will confidently draft a policy your warehouse can't honor. Every promise on the page has to be audited against reality by someone who knows the reality.
• Customer service. The chat widget answers the easy 80%. The 20% who are angry about a late parcel are yours.

In our assessment this is where "AI store builder" marketing over-promises hardest: the website is perhaps a fifth of a working store. It's the visible fifth, which is why it's the one that gets advertised.

1. Selling a modest catalog of standard products, want one bill: Hostinger's ecommerce tier — budget the $16.99/mo renewal, not the intro banner.
2. Want the mainstream platform with room to grow into bookings and apps: Wix Core at $29/mo billed annually.
3. Want WordPress and WooCommerce ownership with the assembly done for you: 10Web, on any plan.
4. Design-led brand, already on Shopify or willing to pay for it: Framer plus the Commerce plugin.
5. The store is really an app in disguise: Lovable, plus a developer's mindset about what you're signing up to maintain.
6. Local service business that sells almost nothing online: Durable and a payment link, and stop overthinking it.
